Oil field workers face a high risk of injury after record year

Last month, the U.S. Energy Information Administration announced that North Dakota set a record-breaking year for crude oil production. As a result, the United States now produces more oil than any other nation.

While this is good for the economy, it can also present risks to workers in the nation’s oil fields. In the last three years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported oil and gas workers were involved in almost 500 hospitalizations and 150 amputations. Additionally, the CDC reported over 1,000 workers died in oil field accidents in the past 15 years.

With the resurgence in oil production, workers now face additional opportunities for accidents to occur. The CDC found the most common causes of injury and death for workers in oil fields include:

  • Explosions
  • Fires
  • Machine malfunctions
  • Vehicle accidents
  • Trip and falls
  • Falling objects
  • Exposure to chemicals

Additionally, insufficiently trained workers and inadequate safety procedures are a common cause of accidents. Because shifts can last several hours, there have been a number of tragic accidents involving oil workers falling asleep while driving home.

Sadly, these accidents can result in painful and life-altering injuries for oil field workers. The most common injuries include amputations, broken bones, burns, lacerations, spinal cord and brain injuries, concussions and even death. Hearing loss is also a common occurrence among oil field workers because of the loud machinery and constant drilling.

If you or someone you love has been injured in an oil field accident, consult with a trusted personal injury attorney in your area today. North Dakota legal professionals understand the oil and gas industry and will help you fight for the compensation you deserve.
